On August 7, 1998, al-Qaeda conducted simultaneous attacks using trucks filled with explosives at two U.S. embassies in the East African cities of Dar es Salaam and Nairobi. The Nairobi blast killed 213 people, 12 of which were Americans, and the Dar es Salaam explosion killed 11. Although the bombs were targeted at Americans to mark the eight anniversary of the arrival of American troops in Saudi Arabia, the vast majority of the casualties were local citizens.
