A private military contractor (PMC) provides armed combat or security services. The services and expertise offered by PMCs are typically similar to those of governmental security or military forces. As of June 20, 2012, there have been 1,569 U.S. private military contractor deaths in Iraq and as of December 31, 2013, a total of 1,582 civilian contractors were killed in Afghanistan.
